Pietermaritzburg - Strange orange orbs have once again been spotted in the Pietermaritzburg night sky.

Prestbury resident Helen Reece said she spotted four orange orbs in the sky while driving along Mayor’s Walk on her way home on Thursday night.

“My first thought was that they were reflections of the street lights in my window,” she said.

“When I got home, they were still there. I stood in my driveway and watched them for a while.

“They were all moving in different directions. Sometimes some of them were still and others were still moving,” she said.

Reece said the orbs seemed to be at a high altitude, but were “too big” to be stars.

“From where I was, they were about the size of a pea. There was not a single cloud in the sky and everything was completely silent.”

She said the orbs disappeared after about 10 minutes.

“I’m not sure what they were; it could have been drones but I don’t know.”

Johannesburg Gadget Shop salesperson C.J. Pae said the orange orbs could well have been drones.

“Drones can reach a height of 7 km and have lights on the bottom so the pilot can see where it is,” he said.

“They make a buzzing sound, but you will not hear anything if it is high up.”

On Friday, East Coast Radio reported on its website that a teenager from Chatsworth had filmed what appeared to be bright lights in the sky. Mechille Mudaly caught what looks like an orange orb in the early evening sky.

The video shows what appears to be a street light at first, but the object is high up in the sky and moving slightly.
