Johannesburg - Several ANC dignitaries have been coming in and out of the Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg to visit ailing struggle stalwart and former Rivonia trialist, Ahmed Kathrada, 87.

Kathrada's foundation announced on Monday night that his condition had worsened after both his lungs became infected with pneumonia.

Speaking outside the hospital, Gauteng Premier David Makhura said: "Uncle Kathy is still with us. We are praying that God will spare him, but he is in a critical state."

He went on to say that Kathrada had lived a life of "dedication to fellow human beings".

Ahmed Kathrada Foundation director Neeshan Balton said that, despite appropriate medical care, his condition was deteriorating.

Balton said Kathrada had experienced several postoperative complications, rendering his condition serious.

Kathrada underwent surgery relating to a blood clot on the brain earlier this month.

While doctors had indicated at the time that the operation was successful and that he was in a stable condition, they said it would be some time before he fully recovered.
