Cape Town - Three stricken hikers were rescued as inclement weather descended on Table Mountain on Tuesday night.

Wilderness Search and Rescue spokesperson Johann Marais said that a rescue team, comprising of a paramedic and expert climbers, had escorted the trio to safety.

“The field team resolved that it would be safer to take them up the mountain and then rendezvous with vehicles on the back of Table Mountain.

“There is a small and difficult track from Constantia Neck which allows one to drive up. This is what our volunteer 4x4 members did last night in howling wind and thick mist,” Marais added.

The hikers who had been stuck on the trail were transported safely down and the operation was completed around 01:00 on Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday night, it was reported that six technically-skilled volunteers, a paramedic and at least three climbers from Hottentots Holland were making their way to the Blinkwater Ravine to assist the hikers.
