Johannesburg - The wife of late former South African president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela, Graça Machel, on Wednesday said children had a responsibility to study hard.

"You must pass with the highest marks, the best mark possible," she said at the launch of Nelson Mandela Day 2016.

Actions on Mandela Day should become a way of living, not an annual event, she said.

It is celebrated each year on the day of Madiba’s birthday, July 18. People are encouraged to do 67 minutes of community service, for the 67 years Mandela dedicated to fighting for human rights and social justice.

"Mandela Day is a symbol of what we are trying to achieve and will continue to try on a daily basis," she said.

Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Sello Hatang said every day should be Mandela Day.

"We’re not about 67 minutes, but making every day Mandela Day."

This year, the foundation would focus on shelter, literacy, food security, and the environment.

Hatang said the foundation had already built 120 houses and 90 libraries throughout the country.

Also present at the event were some members of the cast of soap opera Isidingo which had the children who were present in ecstasy.

Machel helped prepare food packets for the children.
