Bloemfontein – Free State police have cautioned parents to ensure the safety of children during the current heatwave.

This after the bodies of two children were retrieved from a dam in Meloding near Virginia by the Bloemfontein Diving Unit on Sunday.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Thabo Litabe the two children, both aged 11, drowned while playing with other children on Saturday in a dam.

An inquest has since been opened.

Litabe said children should be advised not to play around dams, streams and rivers.
