Johannesburg – One suspected hijacker was shot dead and four were arrested in a shoot-out with police near the Trade Route Mall in Lenasia, Johannesburg Metro Police said on Friday.

JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said officers responded to a call about a white Fortuner which was hijacked in Walkerville.

“As they approached it at the traffic lights, suspects jumped into a Hyundai H1 and opened fire on the two officers,” Minnaar said.

The two officers returned fire shooting three suspects. One suspect managed to escape and police recovered one firearm.
