Johannesburg - Three suspected car thieves were wounded in a shoot-out with police on the N14 near Lanseria on Thursday morning, Gauteng police said.

Captain Kay Makhubela said police were waiting at the N14 Petroport, between the R511 and R512, for a stolen vehicle travelling from Mpumalanga to Pretoria.

When they tried to stop them, the men tried to escape and a gunfight broke out, during which three suspects were wounded.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Max Cohen said one of the alleged hijackers was critically injured after being shot in the chest. His alleged accomplice was shot in the leg.

The third suspect sustained a bullet gaze to his leg and did not require hospital care. The suspected stolen bakkie was found off the road, in the veld, he said.

Makhubela said police recovered two unlicensed firearms, a blue light, and the stolen vehicle. All three were arrested. The two injured were under police guard in hospital.

A case of murder, possession of a stolen vehicle, and possession of unlicensed firearms was opened.
