Bloemfontein – Two suspected robbers were shot and wounded and three others arrested when they allegedly targeted a cash-in-transit van in Welkom, in the Free State, the Hawks said on Wednesday.

They received a tip-off from crime intelligence that a group of men would try to rob the cash van between Welkom and Kroonstad around 05:00 on Monday, spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

When the gang of five eventually targeted the cash van, attempts to stop them failed. They were driving a silver BMW and VW Polo. Police gave chase and a shootout ensued.

Three were arrested and two were taken to hospital. They allegedly had an undisclosed amount of counterfeit money in their possession.

Cases of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and conspiracy to rob were opened.

They were expected to appear in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
