Durban – KwaZulu-Natal's acting provincial police commissioner has welcomed the arrest of six men suspected of killing an off-duty police officer two weeks ago.

"We have warned criminals in the past that those who target police officers, whether on or off duty, will have their freedom swiftly curtailed," Major General Bheki Langa said on Monday.

The men, aged between 18 and 22, were arrested on Friday in Port Shepstone and charged with murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and the theft of a motor vehicle.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker, the suspects accosted two off-duty Msinsini police officers at gunpoint on November 30.

Naicker said they robbed the officers of their service pistols.

"In the process they shot and killed Constable Siyabonga Mbele, 28. They then took his vehicle and fled the scene."

Naicker said that during the arrest the two service pistols that were taken during the robbery were recovered together with an unlicensed 9mm pistol suspected to have been used to kill Mbele.

Langa said authorities would not allow hardened criminals to "roam around freely".

"They will enjoy our hospitality during the festive season as they can celebrate Christmas and the new year with their fellow thugs [in prison]."
