Pietermaritzburg - A tattooed burglar plaguing the Scottsville area is still in hospital after he was tackled by a police dog earlier this week.

Police are appealing for any residents who may have fallen victim to the man’s alleged thievery to come forward if they recognise the tattoos across his body.

On Monday, the 24-year-old man allegedly broke into a house in Buckingham Road, Pelham.

It is believed he smashed a window, grabbed a laptop and fled over a wall into a neighbouring property.

Alerted by a neighbour, police quickly responded and cordoned off the entire area in search of the man.

When he was eventually spotted, members of the Flying Squad and Alexandra police tracked him down and found him hiding in a yard.

The man was taken into custody at the Alexandra police station, but while he was in the charge office, he made a run for it.

The man fled into the Scottsville area and police once again had to cordon off an entire area they believed he was hiding in.

With police dogs on the prowl, following his scent, it did not take long before the man was rearrested.

He was tackled by a police dog before being hauled into custody.

According to a police source, the man may be linked to other smash-and-grab style break-ins at student digs and homes in the Scottsville and Pelham areas.

Anyone who recognises the tattoos should contact Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese at 082 826 8954.
