Pietermaritzburg - A man was killed and another injured when four men posing as passengers hijacked a minibus taxi in Edendale on Saturday.

According to a police source, the taxi driver, his girlfriend and the conductor were making their final rounds and were heading to Taylor’s Halt when the incident occurred on Edendale Road.

It is alleged the four remaining passengers held up the driver, demanding his cellphone and that he get out of the vehicle.

It is believed one of the men opened fire when the driver refused, shooting him in the chest and injuring the conductor.

Despite their injuries, the men fled the vehicle and jumped into nearby bushes for cover, leaving the girlfriend in the taxi with the robbers.

The police source said the men dropped the girlfriend near Taylor’s Halt before speeding off. It is believed she flagged down a vehicle and returned to the scene of the shooting, where she found her boyfriend dead.

It is believed a passing motorist had rushed the injured conductor to Edendale hospital.

According to a statement by the police’s provincial media centre, officers are investigating murder and hijacking charges. No arrests have been made thus far.
