Cape Town - A minibus taxi driver was arrested on Thursday morning, two days after allegedly fleeing an accident in which a Cape Town traffic officer was killed.

He had a shoe that matched the one left at the scene and clothes he wore at the time of the accident, on Jakes Gerwel Drive at 07:30 on Tuesday, City of Cape Town safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith said.

"He made a full confession at the time of arrest," Smith said.

The man was caught during a joint operation between metro police and the City´s special investigations unit in Mfuleni around 01:00 and was being held at the Nyanga police station.

Mogamat Faried Galant died when the taxi driver lost control, veered into oncoming traffic, and crashed into his car. Galant, 35, had been driving towards the Hillstar traffic department.

Four cars were involved in a secondary collision.

The City had offered a R50 000 reward for information that would lead to the driver's arrest and conviction.

Galant was buried on Tuesday afternoon, in accordance with Muslim rites.
