Johannesburg - A taxi driver was shot dead near Eldorado Park on Friday morning, police said.

The taxi was driving from Eldorado Park to Freedom Park at around 04:30 when shots were fired at the vehicle, said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

"The driver was hit several times. He died at the scene," Dlamini said.

The taxi was carrying four passengers at the time. None of them were injured.

The shooting is suspected to be linked to taxi violence.

It is understood there was some tension brewing between the existing taxi association and a new group of people who want to form their own association for Freedom Park.

Police had since opened a case of murder.

Jan de Necker Street on which the shooting had happened was still closed by 07:30 as police were still clearing the scene.
