Pietermaritzburg - Two teachers were hijacked in the parking lot at George Cato Primary School in Cato Ridge this morning.

A source who witnessed the incident said the attackers pointed guns at the teachers, a man and a woman, and pulled them out of their cars.

The teachers were not hurt and the men fled with their VW Polo and Mercedes-Benz cars.

“We have a different parking area for teachers inside the school. This parking area is opened at 7 am and is normally closed 45 minutes later. It seems like the hijackers were already waiting inside the parking area before the teachers could arrive,” said the source.

Provincial Department of Education spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said: “When it comes to the safety of our teachers and pupils in schools, we are all responsible. This could have happened anywhere and we are glad that no lives were lost during this incident.”

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the Mercedes-Benz was later recovered in KwaNdengezi.

Two cases of car hijacking were opened at Camperdown SAPS for investigation and no arrests have been made.
