Wellington - The teenager accused of murdering acclaimed author Winnie Rust was reportedly a star athlete who shone in cross country running.

Nigel Plaatjies, 18, appeared in the Wellington Magistrate's Court on Monday, less than a week after the writer was found dead in her Uitsig home.

The teen, covering his head with an oversized jacket, was ushered in by police and didn't remove the jacket, despite what appeared to be loved ones trying to catch his attention.

Magistrate Brenda Mpako postponed the case to May 24 for a bail application.

Netwerk24 reported on Sunday that Rust started helping the young man financially after she noticed how he excelled at sports. He matriculated last year.

He is one of two people arrested over the weekend after Rust, 77, was found dead in her Third Avenue home on Wednesday.

Her husband, Dr Manie Rust, 87, woke up from the sound of the bell at the gate around 15:30.

When he got up to see who was at the gate, he found his wife dead on the kitchen floor. She had injuries to her face, and her hands and feet were bound.

Outside the court, locals spoke of the "terrible thing" that had happened to the respected writer.

"Hoe doen mens so iets aan 'n bejaarde vrou? [How do you do something like this to an elderly woman?]," one woman said.

A second suspect has been arrested, police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed on Monday.

The 34-year-old suspect was expected in court once he was charged.
