Johannesburg - A 14-year-old pupil is in a critical condition after he was struck by a minibus taxi and dragged for about 18 metres on Louis Botha Avenue in Houghton, Johannesburg, on Thursday, paramedics said.

"The boy was on his way to school when he was hit and dragged for about 18m by the taxi," Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said.

Mathe said when paramedics arrived on the scene, they managed to stabilise the boy who was critically injured.

He was then rushed to a nearby hospital.
