A 15-year-old boy has been hit by a train while allegedly playing on railway tracks along one of Cape Town's Metrorail routes, police said on Tuesday.

"The boy is alive and [SA Police Service] members are with him at a nearby day hospital," said police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk.

It is understood that the accident occurred near the suburb of Bonteheuwel.

Bonteheuwel councillor Angus McKenzie said the boy was accompanied by a 12-year-old friend.

"The 12-year-old was not injured but [is] in shock at the moment," McKenzie said.
