Cape Town - A teenager was killed while another sustained severe injuries when they were hit by a train at the White Road train crossing in Retreat on Wednesday.

The duo was on a bicycle and apparently didn't see the oncoming train when they crossed the line, ER24 spokesperson Pieter Rossouw said.

"When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene they found that one of the boys sustained severe head injuries. Unfortunately, there was nothing that paramedics could do for him and he was declared dead on scene."

The second boy sustained critical injuries including various fractures and head injuries.

"[He] was treated and transported to Groote Schuur Hospital for urgent treatment."

Police are investigating the incident.
