Cape Town – A 16-year-old boy who tried to cool off drowned in the Umgeni River in Kwadabeka on Friday afternoon, IPSS Medical Rescue said.

The boy had apparently swum near the weir before getting into trouble, according to a statement by paramedics.

Police divers recovered his body five metres under water.

An inquest docket was opened.
