Durban – Sporadic skirmishes between protesting students and police were reported on Thursday night at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Pietermaritzburg campus.

According to a statement issued by UKZN on Friday, the academic programme was continuing in earnest.

"There have been reports of a group of students gathering at the Oval Residence on the Westville Campus.

"Last night, some disruptions were experienced on the Pietermaritzburg Campus, whereby protesters were singing and chanting, set off firecrackers at the WOB residence and threw bottles at security personnel in front of the SU building," it read.

On Friday morning, unconfirmed reports of running battles between police and students on Howard College Campus surfaced.

These could not be confirmed at the time of publishing.

"We caution the university community to desist from engaging in unlawful protest action. Please be advised that action will be taken against any individuals found to be in contravention of the High Court interdict in place," the statement said.
