Pietermaritzburg - Pietermaritzburg's Liberty Midlands Mall is on high alert, along with other shopping centres across the country, following warnings of terrorist attacks.

National and international media platforms recently reported that Western intelligence agencies warned of the threat of attacks on sites in South Africa popular with foreigners.

According to the reports, American, Australian and British citizens living in the country or visiting have been sent advisories in recent days, saying the attacks could stem from a global call to action by Islamic State.

The threats have resulted in security being expanded at popular tourist destinations like the Mall of Africa and Sandton City in Johannesburg, and Cape Town’s Victoria and Alfred (V&A) Waterfront.

In an e-mail to The Witness yesterday, JHI Retail CEO Nomzamo Radebe said Liberty Midlands Mall had taken note of the security alert issued by the U.S. Embassy in South Africa.

“The Liberty Property Portfolio would like to assure our customers that their security is of utmost priority to us. All stores are open and the mall is trading as normal. The increased security measures have been implemented in line with the Liberty Group policy and we are working closely with police and all emergency services,” Radebe said.
