Cape Town – An EFF MP was forced to withdraw after referring to Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane as a “Zupta minister” in Parliament on Tuesday.

The EFF had been referring to President Jacob Zuma as “Zupta” throughout the sitting while presenting motions without notice.

They also referred to the ANC as “useless” and labelled Zuma corrupt.

National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete drew a line when EFF MP Mmabatho Mokause referred to the minister as “Zupta Zwane”.

The EFF MP was asked to withdraw all references to Zupta as there was no one by that name in Parliament.

And when Mokause again referred to Zuma as “Zupta”, the House erupted in protest from the ruling party.

EFF chief whip Floyd Shivambu objected loudly to the issue.

Shivambu said they did not say “there is a Zupta in this House”, but were referring to Zupta generally.

Shivambu was asked to leave after he called the speaker by her first name, and said they were also not being respected.

After various objections, the Serjeant-at-Arms was called to remove him, Shivambu left.

ANC chief whip Stone Sizani said the president could not be called a Zupta.

When questioned about her decision regarding Shivambu, Mbete said they had tolerated the EFF and their behaviour for too long.

“We are not going to have unlimited patience with a clear abuse of the rules and the house itself,” she said.

The EFF cautioned the National Assembly MPs to get used to the phrase, as they would be using it for a while.

Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor said there should be proper sanctions for members who referred to the presiding officers by their first names.
