Hair theft is fast becoming a reality in South Africa. First it was the stealing of dreadlocks where thieves would cut off the dreads of unsuspecting victims in busy streets or taxi ranks, and now it seems the latest phenomenon is weave snatching.  Unsuspecting victim Melissa Thando Gabela opens up about how she was beaten up for her weave.

My friend and I were invited to go to the News Café in Woodmead, Joburg by a few guys on recently. The guys also invited three other girls we did not know.

When we observed the camera footage at the restaurant, we could see how their plot unfolded.

The girls would follow me to the bathroom whenever I went and the third time I went to the loo, they attacked me.

When they came into the bathroom, one of the girls grabbed and pulled me by the neck while the other one snatched the wig off my head. The girls walked out after the incident. I have bruises on my neck and face and I went to report this matter to the police.

I’m so angry and I need people to help me identify these girls so I can get my hair back. The hair cost me R3 000 and I only bought it three months ago. I have posted the video footage on my Facebook page and I need people to share it so that these thieves can be found.

(The video has since been deleted from her Facebook page)
