Bloemfontein - "Hopefully in future I get a lot of you guys chasing me and giving me headaches," sprint sensation Wayde van Niekerk jokingly said to pupils at his alma mater, Grey College, where he received a hero's welcome on Friday.

Thousands of residents lined the streets of Bloemfontein as the Olympic gold medallist made his way to the school in an open-topped bus. His coach Ans Botha was also on board.

"It is such a special day to me," Van Niekerk said in his speech at the school. "What it represents is our unity as a nation and that really inspires me to keep on doing what I do.

"This is just the beginning of me and what I can do."

After Van Niekerk's speech the Free State MEC for sports Mmathabo Leeto presented Botha with a special Minister's Sports Award.

The bus parade's next stop is the University of the Free State.

At the 2016 Rio Olympic Games Van Niekerk produced the best performance of his career where he smashed the 17-year-old world record set by Michael Johnson in 1999 with an outstanding performance in the 400m sprint with a time of 43.03 seconds.

He received a festive welcome from a multitude of fans, family, friends, officials and sponsors at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday when he finally returned to South Africa.
