Durban - Three of the six awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from the Empangeni police station in May are still at large, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala told News24 on Tuesday that investigations are still continuing "as well as internal investigations" into how the suspects escaped.

Media reports suggest that police forgot to lock the cell and the six awaiting trial detainees walked out.

Among the escapees who are still at large is a murder suspect Thanda Zulu, 32, who is accused of the 2014 hit on a couple, who were retired teachers.

The couple was shot while seated in their car at the Empangeni taxi rank.

The other escapees are Sandile Majola, 29, and Mxolisi Mbuyazi, 22, who were both facing charges of shoplifting.

Three of them have been re-arrested, Gwala said.

Gwala said all the detainees had escaped from police cells at the police station on May 30 at about 20:10.

Cases of escaping from lawful custody were opened at Empangeni police station for investigation, Gwala said.

"We appeal to community members not to try and apprehend them since they are dangerous. They should rather contact the nearest police stations as soon as they spot them," she said.
