Three children, aged between two and 11, burnt to death after the shack they had been sleeping in caught fire, Gauteng police said.

The incident happened on Tuesday evening in Spooktown informal settlement in Bekkersdal, Sergeant Linkie Lefakane said on Wednesday.

Lefakane said two died on the scene and a third was taken to Bekkersdal Emergency Services, where he died of his injuries.

"It is alleged that the mother was sleeping with her kids in separate rooms when the fire started," she said.

"The mother allegedly managed to escape with her one-year-old, leaving the others behind."

Lefakane said police were investigating the cause of the fire and an inquest docket had been opened.

Station commander Colonel Tinos Swart urged residents to avoid leaving heaters and paraffin stoves unattended.
