East London - Three people have been killed and 14 more injured after a car and minibus taxi collided on the N2 near Butterworth in the Eastern Cape, police said on Sunday.

“The three occupants of the sedan car, a 59-year-old male driver, and two female passengers, aged 27 and 24, died on the scene,” said Captain Jackson Manatha in a statement.

He said those who died in the accident, which took place on Saturday afternoon near Thanga Village, were all related.

A male passenger in the car was seriously injured. Thirteen people travelling in the taxi were injured, including the driver. They were treated in hospital.

The cause of the accident is unknown but police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
