Durban - Three people were killed and nine others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a minibus taxi on the R28 in Carletonville, on the West Rand, on Thursday morning, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics found the wreckage of the taxi wedged against the truck at the roadside.

“Paramedics found that three men had already succumbed to their injuries. Two of the deceased were found lying trapped inside the taxi while the third was found lying outside the taxi,” he said.

“Nine other patients were found on scene with injuries ranging from minor to critical. Some of these patients also lay trapped inside the wrecked taxi. Rescue workers had to use the jaws-of-life equipment to free the patients from the wreckage."

Two medical helicopters were used to airlift the critically wounded taxi passengers.

The cause of the collision was being investigated.
