Cape Town – Three people have been released from a hostage drama inside the Shoprite supermarket in Nyanga Junction on Monday afternoon, a police spokesperson said.

Police are unable to estimate how many people are inside the building or how many armed robbers are involved, Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana told News24.

A hostage negotiator was deployed to the scene on Monday morning, but Rwexana said there was no communication between police and the robbers.

"We do not know what their demands are," Rwexana said.

She said no additional shots have been fired since the shooting earlier the morning.

City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for safety, JP Smith, said he received reports that four people, including a private security guard, have been injured but could not confirm.

He said police asked metro police to vacate the premises.

Minister of police Fikile Mbalula tweeted that the a special task force has been sent to the scene.

“The situation is under SAPS control,”  he said.
