North West – Seven wards in the Tlokwe local municipality in the North West will hold their by-elections on February 24, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) confirmed.

This follows the ruling by the Constitutional Court late last year setting aside the results of the by-elections held in 2013 and ordering that new elections be held within 90 days.

The court found that irregularities in the voters’ roll for the by-elections included voters from adjoining wards who had incorrectly registered to vote in the by-elections and the fact that the Electoral Commission had not availed to contestants a voters’ roll with addresses.

In their statement the IEC said a further five by-elections are scheduled to take place on the same day in KwaZulu-Natal (1 ward), Limpopo (2 wards) and the Western Cape (2 wards) bringing to 12 the number of wards being contested in by-elections covering 47 voting districts.

The IEC said voter registration for the by-elections in Tlokwe will be held between 08:00 and 17:00 at voting stations on Saturday and Sunday.

The IEC say they have implemented a variety of initiatives to ensure the concerns of the Constitutional Court are fully addressed.

"Among the special initiatives being implemented is the removal of any voters registered in the incorrect voting district from the segment of the voters’ roll for that voting district. They are instead being re-registered in the correct voting district as identified by the address captured on their original voter registration application form," the IEC statement read.
