East London - A toddler burnt to death when a rondavel burnt down in Centane on Friday night, Eastern Cape police have confirmed.

Police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said the incident took place at 23:20 in Mazeppa Location, Gcina Village.

“The allegation is that the mother of the three girls was alerted by community members that her hut was on fire. The mother was sleeping in a different house,” he said.

The father of the children had been away attending a funeral in Willowvale.

“The mother managed to rescue two girls, aged 9 and 13, but unfortunately a two-year-old girl was burnt to death.”

The children have been admitted to hospital.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

An inquest docket is being investigated.
