East London - A 2-year-old boy has drowned after he apparently wandered off, following dogs to a river, Eastern Cape police said.

Captain Jackson Manatha said on Sunday the mother was busy cleaning her house in Mpahleni Village, Ngqamakhwe on Saturday when the boy disappeared.

"[She] asked from other boys the whereabouts of her son," said Manatha.

She was told the boy had followed the dogs to a local river. When she arrived at the water, she found her son already dead.

An inquest was opened.
