Durban - An Amanzimtoti toddler is fighting for his life in a Durban hospital after he was found floating in a swimming pool on Thursday morning.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said that paramedics had rushed to the scene in the Athlone Park area of Amanzimtoti.

"Reports from the scene indicate that the father found the 2-year-old boy floating in the water," he said.

"Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the child to be in a critical condition, with shallow breathing, after the father had resuscitated the boy. Paramedics treated the child and assisted ventilations on route to a nearby hospital, where a medical team was standing by to treat the child."

Botha said that this was the fourth such incident involving a toddler this holiday season.

"Children disappear very quickly from your sight and, for this reason, we advise people to cover the swimming pool with a SABS approved net, or to fence the pool in to prevent such tragedy," he said.
