Cape Town - One of the ANC's top MPs, Dr Makhosi Khoza, has been promoted to chairperson of Parliament's public service and administration portfolio committee.

Khoza told News24 on Tuesday that she had been redeployed to the new portfolio, from the standing committee on finance, but that the move was a promotion.

Speculation had been rife that Khoza was moved from the finance committee to make space for incoming former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe.

Khoza said she did not understand the "hullabaloo" around her redeployment, and did not want to comment on the speculation.

Her appointment would be confirmed in Parliament on Wednesday morning.

She would replace former ANC MP Peace Mabe, who resigned as an MP last year following her nomination as an ANC councillor in Gauteng.

Khoza said she did not control where the ANC placed her. She referred further queries to ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu's office.

Acting ANC caucus spokesperson Nonceba Mhlauli said Khoza's promotion had nothing to do with "making space for any other person", as reported in the media.

She distanced the party from the rumours, saying the job is line with Khoza's field.

"People are promoted all the time. She is well qualified for the position. She has a PhD in public administration. And she was the best person for the job."

Khoza gained recognition last year for her chairing of the process to appoint a new Public Protector. Her handling of the issue garnered praise from all parties.

She is also a member of the ad hoc committee looking into the SABC board's fitness to hold office.

Her ANC colleagues were heard congratulated her informally before the ad hoc committee began its work after lunch on Tuesday.
