Bloemfontein – A senior Free State municipal official appeared briefly at the Winburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for allegedly killing his wife.

Maphobole Maphobole, the director of corporate services in the Tokologo local municipality, allegedly went to visit his parents for the weekend with her body in the boot of his car.

"The accused appeared amid a heavy public presence where his case was postponed for a formal bail application," said police spokesperson Sergeant Ian Gaobepe.

Gaobepe said dozens of ANC Women’s League, EFF and DA members lined benches behind him in court.

Maphobole, 33, was caught after two homeless men spotted him apparently burning her body on Sunday morning and alerted the police, said Gaobepe.

He allegedly pushed his 26-year-old wife against a wall in their home in Langenhoven Park, Bloemfontein, on Friday evening. She hit her head and then collapsed.

Maphobole will appear in court on December 11 for a formal bail application.
