Johannesburg - A first-year student at the North West University's Postchefstroom campus died after getting into difficulties while swimming with friends in the campus pool, the university has said.

In a statement, vice chancellor Professor Dan Kgwadi said he was informed of the incident by the rector of the campus on Saturday night.

He said the student, Xavier Klein, was a first-year student in B Com Financial Accounting. The incident happened on Saturday afternoon.

Kgwadi said this was the fifth Pukke student to have died in unforeseen circumstances in the last four weeks.

"Earlier, three female students died in a car accident, then a female student passed away of meningitis."

He said Klein apparently did not feel well after swimming a couple of lengths and later sat at the side of the pool.

"He started swimming again and that is when he got into trouble. His friends together with fellow students got him out of the water and immediately started CPR," Kgwadi said.

He said emergency services from a netball tournament nearby responded within minutes.

"[Klein] was taken to MediClinic via ambulance, but unfortunately passed away in the Intensive Care Unit late last night," he said.

The cause of death is still unknown.
