Mthatha - Passengers travelling by bus from Durban to East London found themselves caught up in, not one, but two accidents during their journey.

The first incident occurred while the bus was travelling on the N2, near Mthatha on Sunday afternoon and the bus driver had to swerve suddenly for a stray animal in the middle of the road, Department of Health spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said.

In the process, the bus tipped over and landed on its side.

Twenty passengers sustained minor injuries during the incident and were taken to the nearby Mthatha Regional Hospital for treatment, Kupelo said.

A second bus was then arranged for the remainder of the journey to East London on Monday morning.

However, not long after they started the second leg of their journey, the second bus collided with a bakkie at Kei Cuttings, leaving nine people slightly injured, Kupelo said.
