Pietermaritzburg - The provincial Department of Transport has obtained a court interdict against disgruntled taxi operators in Port Shepstone, preventing them from causing further disruptions there.

The taxi operators went on the rampage this week blocking the entrance to the taxi rank and intimidating security personnel from Kenyon Security Services — a “peace keeping” company that was brought in by the department to ensure stability, law and order.

The taxi operators had accused the department of being biased towards a long distance taxi association, which they had accused of trying to hijack the Port Shepstone rank.

Mchunu said he was disappointed at the latest developments, which resulted in the arrests of 33 people for violating the Gatherings Act and for damage to properties. He cautioned against those who are “threatening stability and order in the taxi industry”.

He said the department was forced to secure a court interdict against the “illegal activities”.

“These disruptions are unwarranted and we strongly suspect that those who are behind this, are people who view the presence of the security personnel as a threat to their illegal operations within the taxi industry.”
