Mahikeng - Three men have been arrested after they were found in possession of four hippo tusks which they allegedly tried to sell under the guise of elephant tusks in Brits, North West.

The three men were arrested at a Sasol garage in the Brits CBD.

The men, aged between 26 and 39, were arrested following an operation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).

The Hawks' Tlangelani Rikhotso told News24 that the suspects were unaware that they were, in fact, trying to sell the tusks to an undercover agent.

Rikhotso said in a statement that the suspects were in possession of four hippo tusks, four cellphones, and a vehicle valued at R100 000, all of which she said were seized on the spot.

The Hawks launched the operation after receiving information from concerned community members who alleged that the three suspects intended to sell the hippo tusk for R1 500 per kg.

The provincial Head of the Hawks in the North West, Major General Linda Mbana, congratulated the work done by the Hawks.

"When we investigate, we always aim to put criminals behind bars and ensure that justice is served," she said in a statement.

The trio is expected to appear in court on July 6.
