Two people were killed and at least seven others injured when a truck collided with construction vehicles, and caught fire, on the N3 near the Peter Brown off-ramp in Pietermaritzburg on Monday.WATCH

Pietermaritzburg - Another life was claimed on the N3 at Townhill and the road was once again closed on Tuesday night when a truck crashed over a barrier and rolled several metres down an embankment.

The driver was killed and another person left seriously injured.

The crash took place only a day after two people were killed, two were badly burnt and five, including a policeman, were injured when a petrol tanker crashed and exploded in the same vicinity on Monday afternoon.

Recovery processes left some motorists waiting more than 12 hours for the road to be reopened after that accident.

According to ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak, a local resident heard a loud crash on Tuesday night and called paramedics, saying a collision may have occurred on the highway.

Shortly before midnight, paramedics found a large truck trailer obstructing the road.

The cabin of the truck could not be seen and, on further inspection, paramedics found that the cabin had ripped away from the truck and landed several metres down an embankment.

Vermaak said paramedics had to use ropes to descend down the embankment to reach the cabin.

The driver was found dead and another man, believed to be in his 20s, was lying in the back of the cabin with fractured bones.

Unable to free the man, paramedics called firefighters and with the help of the Jaws of Life, the man was freed and taken to the Northdale Hospital.

Vermaak said the rescue and clean-up operation took several hours before the highway was reopened to traffic.
