Cape Town - Western Cape police are investigating assault charges against Beaufort West mayor Truman Prince.

Captain Malcolm Pojie said an assault case was opened against a “known suspect” after a female traffic officer was assaulted on the N1, near Leeu Gamka, on January 21.

Prince and his partner, who was driving at the time, were pulled over for speeding. He had not been charged or appeared in court yet.

No arrests had been made so far, Pojie said. He would not divulge the officer's condition.

DA national spokesperson Phumzile van Damme said in a statement on Sunday that the injuries were “bad”, and called for Prince to be suspended.

Prince denied assaulting the officer and said the matter was blown out of proportion because he was involved.

"I would never assault a woman. I know the law. I merely asked her in a gentle and manly way to move out of the way as she was blocking the driver’s side door," he told News24 on Sunday.

Prince was travelling in a black Mercedes-Benz, registered to the SA Football Association. He is a Safa board member.
