Pretoria - A Tshwane metro police officer was shot and wounded when he responded to a crime in Hercules, Pretoria on Tuesday morning.

"Five... officers were responding to a complaint about criminal activities taking place at a settlement called Gomora in Hercules. Upon arrival the officers were attacked by four suspects," Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said.

"They shot one officer and assaulted another one. They were both rushed to the nearest hospital."

Mahamba said the shot officer was in a critical condition, while his colleague had sustained minor injuries.

Three suspects were arrested following the shooting, with one still on the run.

"Both SAPS and Tshwane metropolitan police rushed to the scene after officers called for backup. They managed to arrest three of the suspects aged between 28 and 31 and are currently hunting for the fourth suspect who is still at large with the [officer's] official firearm taken... [from] the scene," said Mahamba.

He called on members of the public who might have information to come forward and assist police with the investigation.
