Tutu is receiving treatment for a "recurring infection" in Cape Town.

The 88-year-old was admitted to hospital on Wednesday, News24 reported.

According to a statement from the foundation, Leah Tutu said her husband was hospitalised several times in recent years for the same infection.

Foundation chairperson Niclas Kjellstrom-Matseke said the family was hopeful he would be discharged from hospital by next week.
