Cape Town - Children and teens across the country woke up on Wednesday morning to get ready for the start of the new school year.

With #BackToSchool currently trending top on Twitter, there is only one topic on the lips of budding parents this morning; beating the morning mayhem to capture a wonderful first school moment with their kids.

We’ve rounded up what South Africans are saying on social media to mark new beginnings in 2016.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and other senior politicians meanwhile are expected to visit a number of primary and high schools across the country.

Ramaphosa and Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi will hand over a new school to the Daveyton community, east of Johannesburg.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga will be visiting a school in Mamelodi, Tshwane, as part of the department's flagship programme called "Learn to Read" - aimed at entrenching a culture of reading among youngsters.
