Investigations are underway after two robbery suspects were killed during a shootout with police in Ballito, near Durban, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Police traced the suspects to a house in Piesang River, Inanda, after five suspects robbed a Ballito jewellery store at gunpoint on Monday.

"As the police officers approached the house, the suspects opened fire at them," police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said.

"Two suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange of gunfire. Two unlicensed firearms and ammunition were seized from the deceased suspects."

A case of armed robbery was registered at the Umhlali police station for further investigation.

"The investigation into the armed robbery at Ballito continues and attempts are underway to trace and arrest the remaining suspects involved in the incident," Mbhele said.

"The firearms will be subjected to ballistic tests to establish if they were used in the commission of any crimes in the country."
