Gauteng police have arrested four suspects who allegedly shot and killed a 47-year-old man in Ivory Park, east of Johannesburg, police said on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson in Gauteng, Captain Kay Makhubele said the arrests happened at 04:00 on Wednesday.

"In the early hours of yesterday [Tuesday], Ivory Park, Extension Two, the deceased allegedly stole two unlicensed firearms from two of the suspects under the pretence of wanting to commit a crime," said Makhubele.

"The suspects, aged between 30 and 40, are alleged to have visited the deceased at his hiding place, demanded the firearms back and eventually shot him multiple times in the upper body."

Police recovered three firearms, including a police-issued pistol.

Gauteng provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela praised Ivory Park detectives for their sharp work in ensuring the suspects were arrested "within a short space of time".

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon, according to Makhubele, on charges of murder and possession of unlicensed firearms.
