Johannesburg - Two men were arrested on Wednesday in connection with two murders at the Mall of Africa, in Midrand, earlier this year, Johannesburg metro police said.

Police and metro police were tipped off that the two were at the Alexandra Hostel and in possession of a licensed firearm, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

They ran away when officers tried to arrest them on Tuesday night. Officers returned to the hostel on Wednesday morning and caught them.

Two men were shot dead at the Mall of Africa on Sunday July 3. The murders were believed to have been linked to disputes in the local taxi industry. The mall opened on April 28.

At the time, police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the two victims were standing on the pavement at the taxi rank. Two men in a white VW Polo approached them and opened fire.

The men died at the scene.

Minnaar said the firearm was sent for ballistic testing to determine if it could be linked to the murders.
