Pretoria - Two people were arrested in Bloemfontein after they were found in possession of mandrax with an estimated value of R12m, the Hawks said on Tuesday.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said they had received information about a vehicle that was transporting suspected drugs from Gauteng to the Eastern Cape. Members from the office of the Hawks in Bloemfontein were informed and they waited for the truck along the N1.

"The vehicle [Hyundai delivery van] was spotted near the Verkeerdevlei Tollgate. It was followed and was stopped near Bloemfontein. The delivery van was searched and nothing could be found in the vehicle. The van was then taken to the South African Police Service State Garage for further investigation. A false compartment was found underneath the loading area of the vehicle," said Mulaudzi.

Police continued to search the vehicle and they discovered drugs hidden in the false compartment.

"Just underneath the loading zone of the vehicle, the Hawks discovered a self-made compartment with nine bags with 20 plastic packets containing mandrax tablets to the value of R12m," said Mulaudzi.

The driver and the passenger, aged 40 and 35 respectively, were subsequently arrested and were expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, facing charges of dealing in drugs.
