Johannesburg - Two children are in hospital after they were hit by a truck near Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal emergency services said on Sunday.

Spokesperson Robert McKenzie said the accident happened on the N2 highway near Izingolweni, about 40km inland from Port Shepstone.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find to find the children, both girls, aged about 5 and 13, lying on the side of the road, surrounded by a large crowd of bystanders. Their mother, who they had been walking with, was not injured,” he said.

McKenzie said paramedics stabilised the girls at the scene before transporting them to a nearby hospital.

“The five-year-old is in a critical condition, while her older sister is in a serious condition. The exact circumstances leading up to the crash are not known at this stage and the police are investigating,” he said.
