Cape Town - Two EFF members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) were ordered to leave during Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande's tabling of his department's budget there on Thursday.

"Free education now," demanded EFF MP Tebogo Josephine Mokwela, banging on the desk.

She had kept up her heckling from when the House sat at 14:00.

At one point, to the astonishment of other MPs, Mokwela even repeatedly told fellow EFF MP Vusiwana Mtileni to be quiet.

Earlier, while she was delivering her own address during NCOP chairperson Thandi Modise's speech, she told Mtileni, "Sit down, I am your leader", when he tried to rise on a point of order.

She is the party's whip in the NCOP.

Mtileni later explained that he was only trying to complain about a MP who was drowning out her speech by banging on a glass.

But it was when Nzimande started complaining about unruliness during student protests, that Mokwela and another EFF MP, whose name was not immediately available, started chanting "free education now".

They were ordered to leave and were escorted out by a protection officer, still trying to get the last word in before the chamber's door was closed on them.
